Architrave: In classical architecture, this is the lowest part of an entablature that rests on the capital of a column, or the molding around a rectangular opening, such as a door.
Banding: This usually refers to the trim installed around windows, doors, and other exterior architectural features of the home. Banding can be made out of stucco, wood, stone or other durable materials.
Cantilever: An overhang where one floor extends beyond and over a foundation wall.
Cornice: The molded and projecting horizontal member that tops an architectural composition; or a top course that crowns a wall; or a decorative band of metal or wood used to conceal curtain fixtures, or an overhang of a pitched roof, usually consisting of a fascia board, a soffit and trim moldings.
Elevation: Drawing depicting the final look of each side of the home’s exterior.
Entablature: This is a horizontal part in classical architecture that rests on the columns and consists of an architrave, frieze, and cornice.
Epistyle: This is another word for architrave.
Fascia: The flat, horizontal surface below the edge of a roof or a flat piece used as molding. The term is also be used to describe other flat horizontal surfaces in a home.
Frieze: A frieze is a horizontal band that runs above doorways and windows or below the cornice. The frieze may be decorated or plain. This term is also used to describe a band treatment inside the home just below the ceiling.
Redline prints: Blueprints that reflect changes and that are marked with red pencil. Onsite blueprints that do not reflect the changes should be destroyed so that construction errors do not occur.
Soffit: The underside of a structural component, such as a beam, arch, staircase, or cornice. It is used to refer to the flat horizontal area between the edge of the roof and the exterior veneer of the home. Span: The clear distance that a framing element carries without support between structural supports, or the horizontal distance from eaves to eaves.
