Astragal: A molding, attached to one of a pair of swinging double doors, against which the other door strikes.
Balusters: Vertical parts of a railing used between a top rail and bottom rail or the stair treads. Balustrade: The rail, posts and vertical balusters along the edge of a stairway or elevated walkway. Corbel: The decorative and supporting element that holds a mantel or horizontal shelf.
Faux painting: A term used to describe paint applied by an artist to a wall or other surface to resemble stone, leather, plaster and other materials.
Interior architectural detailing: Usually prepared by the interior designer or architect, these include the plans for all of the decorative elements of the home, including special ceilings, niches, wall and floor treatments, trim, built-ins, and more.
Medallions: Made of plaster, stone, precast stone, wood and other materials, and applied to ceilings or walls, medallions are often circular in shape and are used to enhance a light fixture, ceiling fan or other feature.
Millwork: Building materials made of finished wood, including doors, window and doorframes, blinds, mantels, panel work, stairway components, moldings, and interior trim.
Molding: A wood strip, usually with a carved or engraved decorative surface. Dentil molding features a series of square projections that resemble teeth. Molding is frequently used to trim around a ceiling or used as a chair rail halfway up the walls for a decorative effect.
Mullion: A vertical divider in the frame between windows, doors, or other openings.
Muntins: Typically used for decorative purposes, a strip of wood or metal that separates and holds the panes of glass in a window.
Newel post: The large post at the base of a stairway to which the ends of a stair railing or balustrade is fastened. Tile decos: Usually small and highly ornamental, these are the decorative elements installed in tile surfaces.
